A band of Merry (Wo)men sign up in support of the Robin Hood Tax
Last Friday I joined Baroness Glenys Kinnock and Arlene McCarthy MEP in pledging our support for the Robin Hood Tax campaign. Robin Hood Tax is a small tax on bankers – about 0.05% of speculative banking transfers – that could raise billions to help fight poverty and climate change. It would even raise enough to protect our front line services from cuts.
Baroness Glenys Kinnock, Minister of State said: "A 0.05% tax on financial transactions could generate £250 billion to help developing countries who have been hit hardest by the financial crisis. NGOs, including Oxfam and ActionAid...
Sadiq Khan Confirms Government Funding for Metrolink
On Monday I joined Sadiq Khan, Minister for Transport, in Piccadilly to announce that the government has fully approved the plans for the Metrolink extension. The Labour council and I have been lobbying the government to sign off on the plans for the past few weeks and it's great to hear that all our hard work has paid off. Now work on the extension can really get underway and we are one step closer to having one of the best public transport systems in the country. However, the funding could stil be under threat from the Tories...
I’ve signed up to the National Union of Students (NUS) 'Vote for Students' campaign to oppose any major increase in tuition fees, currently capped at £3,225. The Lib Dems claim to be on the side of students, but their policies on higher education are in disarray with U-turn after U-turn. Not even the NUS is calling for an abolition of tuition fees as it would be totally unrealistic and unaffordable at this time. If you want to support Votes for Students then you can sign up here....
Some of you may have noticed us gathered on Saturday afternoon outside Tesco’s in Burnage, awaiting the arrival of John Prescott and his election Battle Bus. It was great to see so many people to turn out for the rally - especially on such a cold afternoon. John was brilliant, giving one of his trademark passionate speeches and it was a fantastic boost for our campaign – he even joined us for a door-knocking session afterwards! If you’re interested in attending future events like this and want to do your bit to help Labour...
The new Metrolink line to Chorlton is on track to open next year, with the Didsbury extension set to follow soon after. Trams will run to Chorlton in 2011, with the line through to Didsbury due to open in 2013. On Friday I was invited along to have a look at the work that’s underway and discuss environmental work, particularly tree replacement, with contractors. Labour’s investment in the extension of Metrolink is fantastic news for our area – giving Chorlton, Didsbury and the surrounding area a fast route to the city centre and beyond, and allowing hundreds...
Labour's Shadow Chancellor Alistair Darling responded to George Osborne's claims today that the government’s economic policy is 'fair' and 'progressive'.
